Election History
On December 7, 1970, after 23 years of independence, Pakistan held its inaugural general election. Citizens from both West and East Pakistan participated in voting across 300 parliamentary constituencies to elect members of the National Assembly of Pakistan. The election marked a decisive victory for the Awami League, securing 160 seats in the National Assembly. However, President Yahya Khan refused to transfer power to the democratically elected government, leading to a historic turn of events. Following a nine-month-long and bloody war, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation. Over the past 52 years of Bangladesh's sovereignty, the country has undergone 11 parliamentary elections for 300 constituencies. The Constitution of Bangladesh, enacted in 1972, mandated a multi-party parliamentary system, laying the groundwork for the first election held in March 1973. Four parliamentary elections were conducted under a presidential system—1979, 1986, 1988, and 1991—while the remaining six, spanning from 1973 and those held after 1991, followed the parliamentary system.
